Pitchers
Madison Bumgarner | LHP | Giants | $18,954 – The lefty hurler gets one of the worst offenses against left handed pitching in the Reds (27th overall in MLB in wOBA). He’s got back to back performances of 17 and 18 points on DraftStreet and is a must start today.
Jacob deGrom | RHP | Mets | $13,136 – deGrom K’d 11 Phillies in his last time out and has been solid if not spectacular in his first four MLB starts. Luckily for deGrom, he gets the worst team in MLB against righties (.280 wOBA) and fifth highest K% (22.6%). I like him a lot to have another double digit point showing.
Chris Tillman | RHP | Orioles | $10,209 – Want to be sneaky? Tillman is the starter for the O’s as Miguel Gonzalez was scratched from his start. Tillman’s salary is extremely low and he gets a fair matchup in a struggling Rangers offense.
Alternative: Michael Wacha ($18,889) is a stud who has been hot lately and faces a poor Royals’ offense. If you can figure out a way to get him and MadBum into your lineup, it might be worth it.
Catcher
Hector Sanchez | Giants | $3,522 – We are going to punt here though Sanchez has had some solid games this year. He’ll likely start with the day game after night and he allows us a lot of roster flexibility elsewhere.
Alternatives: If you want to spend more on a catcher, Wilson Ramos ($5,554) has a solid matchup, bats in the middle of the order in a somewhat rejuvenated lineup and has a couple of HRs against Phillies starter Kyle Kendrick. Miguel Montero ($5,989) also is an option facing a righthander at Coors.
First baseman
Adam Lind | Blue Jays | $5,527 – Lind seems to end up on my roster every day I have a column to write. He’s Justin Verlander who has been pretty horrific as of late. Lind likes to face righties and Verlander looks like a tasty matchup. Did I just write that sentence?
Alternative: Jesus Guzman ($2,500) makes a good punt option as you can’t get a lower salaried player and he’s likely going to be in the lineup against a lefty. Adam LaRoche ($6,675) has poor numbers against Kyle Kendrick, but he’s been a stud all year long.
Second baseman
Jose Altuve | Astros | $6,345 – Altuve burns lefties (.440 wOBA this year) and gets youngster Tyler Skaggs. Altuve is at the top of the order every game and should produce solid numbers today.
Alternative: Ian Kinsler ($6,625) is another lefty mashing second baseman who hits near the top of the order for around the same price as Altuve.
Third baseman
Pablo Sandoval | Giants | $6,714 – Sandoval has finally awoken from his season-long slumber and has excellent numbers against Leake (8 for 14 with two HRs and two doubles).
Alternative: There are a lot of options here in the same salary neighborhood with David Wright ($6,363) who is great against lefties and Juan Francisco ($6,509) who is great against righties. They both make viable options. If you want to go cheap, Eric Campbell ($4,415) of the Mets hit cleanup the last time the Mets faced a lefty and has shown some pop against lefties in his short time in the majors.
Shortstop
Troy Tulowitzki | Rockies | $9,789 – Yea, you should pay for him. He’s got two dingers against Bronson Arroyo in his career and who has a great matchup and he’s second in the league against righties in wOBA.
Alternative: J.J Hardy ($4,522) is quite cheap and has two HRs against Texas starter Colby Lewis. He’s a solid punt to get more expensive options in other positions. Or if you want to go el cheapo guapo, Charlie Culberson ($3,544) of the Rockies is listed as a SS for some reason and will likely be in the lineup.
Outfielder
Rajai Davis | Tigers | $6,442 – Davis is another lefty masher for the Tigers though his spot at the bottom of the lineup limits his upside.
Josh Willingham | Twins | $6,362 – Willingham has come off the DL swinging averaging 4.75 points since his activation and 6 points in his last seven. He gets Wily Peralta who should offer some opportunities for a dinger.
Corey Dickerson | Rockies | $6,363 – Dickerson is a Rockie. And I didn’t seem to have enough Rockies on my squad. He’ll bat near the top of the lineup against Bronson Arroyo. Oh, he has a .463 wOBA against right handers this season.
Alternatives: Tyler Colvin ($4,467) has fantastic Batter versus Pitcher (BvP) numbers against Mike Leake as he’s 6 for 17 with four HRs against Leake. Austin Jackson ($3,734) has not had the season that everyone hoped for, but he’s still hit lefties relatively well and you can’t find this type of upside at such a bargain basement price. Victor Martinez ($7,875) is a DH only at DraftStreet and has been mashing lefties this year.
Stacking options
If you believe in BvP numbers, the Giants make an intriguing early play as they have a number of players with great (albeit small sample size) numbers against Mike Leake. For those late players, the Rockies and the Diamondbacks make excellent options – Bronson Arroyo has given up eight HRs in 28 1 /3 innings in Coors. It also seems I like the Tigers against J.A. Happ, but clearly only as an alternative.
